as always when parting....i say to you

onelove,

Album Description
Sisters Helene and Celia Faussart of the Grammy-nominated French urban music duo Les Nubians have always had an affinity for poetry. That love has culminated with 'Echos, Chapter One: Nubian Voyager',' a unique and remarkable project more than five years in the making.

The singing sisters and "modern day Nubian griots" of LES NUBIANS, Helene and Celia Faussart, have returned from yet another fantastic voyage, and have many poetic tales to share on their new album LES NUBIANS PRESENTS: ECHOS-CHAPTER ONE-NUBIAN VOYAGER. A musical expedition of poetry and song featuring 4 new Les Nubians tracks, the conception of this album came to Helene Faussart on a memorable Feluqua boat trip while traveling with her sister Celia in Aswan, Nubia in 2000. This chic, multi-part album showcases Les Nubians’ lifelong affinity for poetry, be it their own words, or those of other poets they have met along their many tours and travels since 1999, mingled with sultry Afro-soul and hip hop grooves. They have also included three new tracks- "I Disagree," "Rendez-vous New York" (a duet with John Banzai) and 'Solide'.

Les Nubians had previously toured the United States in 1999, befriending many talented musicians and poets; they held a contest in each city to find the best poet, who performed onstage with the duo. Helene also found some talented French wordsmiths

Recorded in NY, Paris, Bordeaux, London, Marseilles and San Francisco, Echos is divided into four parts: La Terre/The Motherland, Dans Le Ville/Urban City Life, Des Hommes et Des Femmes/Love Stories, and Les Elements/Spiritual Human Nature. Each chapter is introduced by Les Nubians and features an array of gifted French, African and American word craftsmen, such as Souleymane Diamanka, Queen GodIs, John Banzaï & C.Lia, Jamarhl Crawford and Nazeelah Jameson.

peace and blessings,

back from ABQ.....and i had a flippin ball.NPS2005, was a wonderful experience for me. i got the chance to timekeep a couple of bouts and judge another (yes, i really did some work!). i was in awe of ALL the great poetry, the love the poets showed, the city of ABQ and the HOTEL BLUE. im upset that i missed the naked pool race and the streaking. but did enjoy being in the lobby with everyone, breaking my Nationals cherry by spittin at a late-nite poet tag session and sitting in on the slam family meeting. losing my voice at finals....damn!

to say that i learned a lot would be an understatement. i was truelly inspired to improve myself as a spoken word artist and slammer. i just wish the week would have ended on a better note!!

oh yea, next year at finals...all the volunteers should be asked to stand up to be saluted by the poets. some of us came a long way on our own dimes, just to support NPS2005 and help it run smoother. just a thought.

6 favorite poets/teams i heard at NPS2005

1. christa bell...deep
2. charlotte....teamwork
3. janean (spelling)....real
4. anis...wordplay
5. fort worth....powerful
6. the klute...funny

honorable mentions:
ok city.....for NOT being scared about being in the toughest bout at Nationals! big ups!!
ragan fox....for being himself and not aplogizing for it.
Cuffee.....who did the piece in the finals about being bi-racial.
Versiz....for the shyt he spit at poetry tag, made me want to throw away my notebook
rachel mckibbens....for just being so damn HOT!!

i look forward to seeing everyone again next year in Austin!

peace and blessings,

im at the gas station with my friend P and got flipped off and called a nigger ......um, to say i lost it, would be an understatement. i throw my water bottle and THEN rush up to the passenger window. Mr. Tough Guy doesnt want to discuss the meaning behind the hand gesture or the history of the word he chose to hurl at me. so, i begin to unleash certain words challenging his manhood, the true nature of his mother and his ancestry while telling him to orally explore my anus......yea yea i know bad Evan....but dude stroked a nerve. here i was being very peaceful and this ASSHOLE upsets the balance! everytime i try to get out, they pull me back in!!

after i calm down, i think about: there were FOUR people in that car! they might have had weapons! i could have been hurt! i could have gone to jail!

im gonna blame the reaction on the writers block that grips me at the moment! yea, thats
it. think the police would have bought it?

Blogging In Action-Please Read

Funny what a couple of words can lead to....got this from USA Today:

Disappearance draws media's gaze
By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY

Eleven days after a young, pregnant woman who is black and Hispanic disappeared in Philadelphia, the national media are giving her the type of attention they previously devoted to white women.

Internet bloggers played a role in pushing Latoyia Figueroa's case into the spotlight.
By Figueroa Family via AP

LaToyia Figueroa, 24, who is five months pregnant and the mother of a 7-year-old daughter, was last seen July 18 near her boyfriend's home. Thursday, police searched a park near there for clues.

Sgt. Ron McClane of the Philadelphia police told the Associated Press there was no evidence yet of foul play. Melvin Figueroa told USA TODAY his daughter has never disappeared before. A local crime commission was offering a $10,000 reward for help in finding her.

Her story was updated throughout Thursday on all three cable news networks: CNN, Fox and MSNBC. Today, all four major broadcast networks plan to run the story on their morning shows.

Internet bloggers appear to have played a role in pushing Figueroa's case into the spotlight. Starting last Friday, Philadelphia-area writers of Internet weblogs, or blogs, organized an e-mail campaign and coordinated their blogging efforts.

Their message to the TV networks: Give Figueroa's story the same sort of attention networks have given to Natalee Holloway, a white teen from Alabama who disappeared May 31 in Aruba, and Laci Peterson, the white, pregnant Californian who was murdered by her husband in 2002.

When the bloggers' efforts began, Figueroa's story had been reported briefly by Philadelphia radio and TV stations and once by the Philadelphia Daily News.

Richard Blair, 51, who writes as Richard Cranium on the blog "The All Spin Zone," led the effort. He said he was contacted Tuesday by a CNN producer. A day later, stories started to appear on CNN and the other cable news channels.

To Blair, the issue was fairness. "When I heard about her, the similarities between her case and Laci Peterson's really struck me. And I thought, 'It's been five days — why hasn't anybody picked up on this in the media?' "

Television networks have been criticized in recent months by commentators such as Washington Post associate editor and syndicated columnist Eugene Robinson. The charge: They report only on missing persons who are white, female and attractive. That focus ignores the fact that men account for slightly more than half of the nearly 50,000 active missing persons cases in FBI files and that blacks account for nearly 30%, although they make up just 13% of the population.

Michael Bass, senior executive producer at The Early Show on CBS, echoed on Thursday comments made previously by television producers when asked about whether they favor stories about white women.

"It's the story that drives our decision (on coverage) rather than the gender or race," he said. Bass said his staff heard about the case from the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia, "though we look at the Web, too. ... It's possible someone in our group saw it there first."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i wonder if it hadnt been for the Bloggers, would her disappearance have been reported. its a shame that WE even have to wonder such a thing!

Famine in Niger

  • Aura: Mad at world leaders
  • Rotation: Fertile Ground-Broken Branches
peace and blessings,

some things i learned while watchin Nightline last night:

1. Niger is in the midst of a Famine
2. 3 and a half million people are in danger of dying
3. most of those in danger are children
4. the U.N. issued warnings LAST year
5. Niger was first hit with a draught, then heavy rains
6. the heavy rains flooded farmland
7. the Niger government did NOTHING as far as asking for help
7. Niger is the 2nd POOREST country in the world
8. Aid relief is slow to arrive
9. Pictures can move the soul

ok, i watched this and some of the images made my soul heart. there was a child, about 4 or 5, that was to weak to brush away the flies that were IN her nostrils. then, there was the family of "nomads", eating the rotting meat of one of their dead cows from a bag filled with flies. there was also the images of children with skin sores, labored breathing and IV tubes. the images of hundreds of people waiting for food that would only feed a few. mothers with shrunkin breast holding on to their dying child.

These people are dying. yet, it isnt reported on your daily news at 5, 6 and 10. its not on the front page of your local newspaper. it isnt being reported as strongly as the bombings that occured in England or the young lady missing in Aruba.

its funny how America and all her allies are channeling BILLIONS of dollars to fight a WAR to gain more oil! And America PAYS farmers NOT to grow more food when it should be PAYING them to GROW a surplus. just think how much of that surplus could be givin or sold to countries in need! it can also be givin to those in NEED here in America!!

One of the issues discussed at the G8 Summit was the "writing off" of the debts of some of the worlds poor countries. all im saying is "duuuuuuuuuuuuh." the countries that loaned the money KNEW that repayment was not a REAL option, they just needed a way to keep a foot on the neck of their former colony.

Want to do the world a favor Mr. President, Mr. Blair and all you other big bad industrial nations? fuck looking for Osama! if you ever catch him, there will be a hundred more to take his place. plus, its just causing unneeded deaths and stress. how about sending some money, food, clean water and medical aid to Niger or any other country that needs emergency assistance. I wouldnt mind seeing those tax dollars used for the eradication of Famine....cause ingnoring it, is a REAL weapon of mass destruction!

Sad News........

  • Aura:
  • Rotation: Nothing
peace and blessings,

Tuesday i found out that my cousin/sister in Chicago had lost her unborn child (she was 7 months pregnant). She called the house at 3 in morning after going to the hospital because the baby hadnt moved for some time. Once she was seen by the doctors, she was told they couldnt find the baby's heartbeat. This would have been my cousin's second child.

yesterday, she went to the hospital so that the baby(a boy)could be removed.

not only is she my cousin, but she is also my best friend. we have been through sooooo much shyt together and are the keepers of each others secrets. she is the one person that i can tell anything to without her thinking any different of me. hell, i missed her wedding (that i was suppose to have been in)during the "lost" period of my life and all SHE was worried about was ME! she is more like a sister than a cousin

right now, i dont know what to say to her to help ease the pain. i know this is hurting her more than she is letting on. if this had been earlier in the pregnancy, i dont think it would have been AS bad but 7 months in......thats rough! im at a loss for words. i just want to cry for her, Darrell (her husband) and the unborn child (his name would have been Terrell). i want to cry for my deceased son(Christopher). i just want to cry. here i was thinking how fucked up me life is...and the Creator goes and slaps me with reality.

Im asking everyone(i dont care about your religious belief)to pray for my cousin her husband, unborn son and our family during this time.

Today, i went to TVA, something i havent done in a looooooong time (my bad Dessa ) and read some of the posted poetry. TVA has got some damn good writers, most of them are on my Bravejournal friends list. its not that i dont love TVA...i just havent really been in the mood to read any poetry...but im coming back around. now, if i could only do something to kick the creative juices to flow so that i can write!! i havent written in about two month and for me thats a very looooooong time. as Blu say; "you pump poems out once a week"....and for a while she was right. it seemed as if i were writing something everyday. maybe trying to get ready for Southern Fried drained me more than i realized. maybe its the issues going on in my life. maybe im just burned from writing. all i know is that it just needs to go the hell away

anyone got any helpful hints for a brother?

Answer to my Def Poetry rant

  • Aura: Feeling Aight
  • Rotation: Erykah Badu-Back In The Day

peace and blessings,

this was taken from my friend and fellow STL poet http://www.raquita.blogspot.com blog in response to HER rant about Def Poetry. it was written by http://www.basseyworld.com

I actually agree with a huge portion of what you posted. It's late and my computer is acting up so I can't say too much. What I will say is that a lot of people behind DPJ are trying to do what's best for poetry. But with all things, presented to the masses for entertainment, they have to make many, many concessions to people who do not have the best interest of poetry or the poets at heart. Stan Lathan the director of DPJ is an amazing man who is trying to do right by poetry. But HBO won't sign a show of unknowns. And there's no audience for straight poets. It's entertainment, there has to be an audience and folks have been fighting to keep things moving in the proper direction. I won't name names as to who isn't. But it's not as black and white (literally) as it appears.

Also, five years ago when I was approached by DPJ, I was concerned about "selling out" and "commercializing" my work. My father told me, "Why should't you get paid for doing what you enjoy? And why shouldn't you be compensated? You wouldn't ask a painter to paint your house 'for the love.'" and he had a great point. And I realized that people who change who they are for commercial success would do it anyway. Those who will stay true to themselves and the work should be the ones pushing to be heard because those voices are just as important as the ones that scream and rant for the sake of it.

It's a choice. I choose not to do commercials for products I don't use. I don't drink soda. I don't drink liquor. Shit, I can't drive anymore. But I will do a voice over for a PSA on something that I believe in. There's a way to pick your battles and win the ones you didnt' pick too.

Word to just 'cuase you own a pen don't make you a poet. Preach that.

Thanks for the shout out and link.

take care,
Bassey.

PS> I guess I did have more than I thought to say.

AND I MUST SAY THAT I AGREE AND TO SOME DEGREE FEEL WHAT THE SISTER SAYS....ITS JUST TOO BAD WE CANT HAVE THE POETRY STRAIGHT, WITHOUT ALL THE BULLSHYT!!
